Guidelines for Teachers
School personnel should establish contact with the child’s oncology team and parents to identify specific needs for a child receiving treatment for cancer. However the following items should cause school personnel to contact parents immediately so they can call their child’s healthcare team.
- A fever of greater than 101F.
- Exposure to chicken pox – contact the child’s parents so they can notify their child’s healthcare team.
- Active bleeding that includes nosebleeds, bruising, pink, red or brown urine, red or black “tarry” stools, or “coffee ground” vomit.
- Central line problems which include any pus, swelling or redness around the site. If you notice leaking or a break in the external tubing, clamp the tubing between the leak and the child.
